Abstract
Introduction: Since their first description in 1945 by Sheinker, subependymomas have been reported in various series, but none with large numbers of patients. In this article, we present a series of nine cases of subependymomas treated at our institution. We examine the presentation, radiological and histological findings, treatments, and long-term follow-up in each case.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed nine cases of subependymomas operated on at our institution between 1998 and 2019. Variables of interest included age, sex, initial manifestation, tumor size, location, extent of resection, short-term clinical evolution, and survival. Tumor size was calculated using the maximum diameter on MRI. The extent of resection was classified as total, subtotal, or partial.
Results: The mean age of the series was 50.75 years, with a range between 30 and 67 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1.25, favoring males. Micro-surgical techniques with classic approaches based on tumor location were used in all cases. The tumor locations were: fourth ventricle (67%), lateral ventricles (22%), and medullary (11%). There were no cases of death, and total resection was achieved in all patients. No recurrences were found during long-term follow-up (average of 9 years).
Conclusion: Subependymomas are benign neoplasms for which surgical treatment presents excellent long-term results with good clinical outcomes
